All good things must come to an end, the better to finish on a high note. But as far as Tom Selleck is concerned, Blue Bloods hasn’t reached that time and may very well be cutting its potential short. CBS announced in November its intention to put an end to the crime drama and Selleck has made it clear he thinks this is an error.

Premiering on September 24, 2010, Blue Bloods follows the Reagan family, led by Selleck’s New York City Police Commissioner Frank Reagan, along with his NYPD squad. Back in March 2023, CBS announced the show was renewed for its 14th season, but the SAG-AFTRA strike put plans on hold. The cast took a pay cut to move production along, according to TV Fanatics, and the 14th season premiere was listed as February 16.

Back on November 20, 2023, CBS confirmed that season 14 would mark the end of Blue Bloods, a move that Selleck finds premature not just in terms of plot but also in terms of the audience’s support.

“CBS will find an awful lot of people aren’t ready to say goodbye to it,” said Selleck, speaking with TVLine. The show’s more popular than ever, and I think [viewership] will increase with the interest this year.”

With any show running for a long while, there’s always the fear of running out of engaging plot points and jumping the shark. Selleck feels that’s not an issue here either, adding, “We’re certainly not out of ideas.”

Following CBS’s announcement that it would not be renewing Blue Bloods for a 15th season, Selleck issued a statement of gratitude for all the show has given him and its viewers. “For the past 13 years it has been an honor and a privilege to work on a show that not only celebrates the men and women who protect and serve New York City,” he said, “but also displayed the importance of family.”

Having recently turned 79, Selleck has assured fans he’s not ready to retire.

January 29 marked his big birthday, and Selleck’s Blue Bloods castmates were ready to celebrate the happy occasion. Abigail Hawk, who plays Detective Baker, gushed on social media, “Happiest birthday, boss. We’re the luckiest!”

Bridget Moynahan, who plays his TV daughter ADA Erin Reagan, also posted, “To the best TV Dad there is… Happy Birthday, Tom!”
