Austin’s last post on X, shared on March 31, has gained a deeper significance in light of his passing.
Other users on X quickly expressed their condolences. One wrote: “What a beautiful soul. He was taken from us far too early. While we may not grasp the timing, I believe God is with him now.”
Another commented: “Sending prayers for strength and courage to the family and friends during this incredibly tough time…”
As reported by the New York Post, Austin was involved in a confrontation with another athlete, 17-year-old Karmelo Anthony, during a track and field event on April 2. The two had not met prior to that day.
It has been reported that Austin approached Anthony, who is from a different school, and asked him to leave the Frisco Memorial High School tent in the stands.
Hunter, Austin’s twin brother, recounted the incident to WFAA, saying, “My brother intervened and told him, ‘You need to move.’ To which he replied, ‘Make me move.’”
It is alleged that Anthony then reached into his backpack and pulled out a knife, stabbing Austin in the chest.
With great sorrow, Hunter shared how he cradled his brother, trying to staunch the bleeding while they awaited emergency help.
He also contacted their parents as Austin was being placed on a stretcher.
“I could see all the blood and the wound, and I was extremely worried. I needed to find his brother, and we rushed to the hospital. We prayed, and while I don’t understand God’s plan, they couldn’t save him. This is murder,” said Jeff Metcalf, the twins’ father, in an interview with NBC Dallas-Fort Worth.
“He was a natural leader. His smile could brighten any room, and his love for football was incredible,” Jeff expressed on a GoFundMe page set up after the tragedy.
Karmelo Anthony has been arrested and charged with first-degree murder in connection with the stabbing. He is currently being held at Collin County Jail with a bond set at $1 million.
Meanwhile, Anthony’s father described his son as a “good kid,” asserting that he was not the instigator of the altercation.
“People have already formed opinions about my son, but he’s not the person they’re portraying him to be,” Andrew Anthony told the New York Post.
“He was not the aggressor. He didn’t start it.”
Our thoughts are with the family of Austin Metcalf. May he rest in peace.
