Shirley MacLaine stopped by for a manicure session before joining her friend at Kristy’s in Malibu for the second time in a week. She looked comfy and colorful in an oversized purple sweater with “MALIBU” printed on it, dark blue slacks, and bright red trainers.

She strolled to the car park wearing big sunglasses while holding her friend’s arm and showing off her manicure. However, Shirley looked frail but cheerful during this rare appearance which comes months before her 90th birthday.

Shirley’s lifelong Hollywood career

Interestingly, Shirley was named after Hollywood child actress Shirley Temple. Like the late Temple, Shirley started her career early as a dancer. She was only three when her mother enrolled her at the Washington School of Ballet. However, she grew up moving into other forms of dancing, acting, and musical theater as she did not want to make a career out of ballet.

Next year will mark Shirley’s first time as a nonagenarian and her seventh decade in the acting industry. She has earned several Academy Award nominations, six Golden Globes, an Emmy, and, more recently, a Lifetime Achievement award at the Industry Dance Awards and Cancer Benefit Show. Shirley prefers to lead a more private life lately and is usually seen with her health aide when out.

Shirley reflects on aging

Although she has been known to take breaks in the past years, Shirley made it clear in 2019 that she had no plans to retire, “I don’t want to quit acting— I really don’t. Even at my age, I have four pictures to do next year. I think my co-stars are surprised I’m still walking upright,” she said.

Shirley, who authored the book, Sage-ing While Age-ing, says her calm and stress-free approach to life is the secret behind her graceful aging. “Not that much bothers me. I think attitudes are a choice. Anger is a choice, peace is a choice, sarcasm is a choice,” she told People. “I eat what I want, I sleep when I want.”
