Paula Abdul served as a judge alongside Simon Cowell and Randy Jackson on American Idol from its inception in 2002 until 2009, contributing significantly to the show’s early success with her warm personality and constructive feedback. She brought a unique perspective to the panel; however, her time on the show was not without controversy. Abdul’s occasional erratic behavior on the singing competition TV series sparked rumors about her well-being, leading to speculation about the nature of her departure in 2009.

Despite publicized disagreements with producers and rumors of contract disputes, the exact reasons for her exit remained unclear. In a recent development, the 61-year-old has taken legal action by initiating a lawsuit against American Idol executive Nigel Lythgoe on the grounds of alleged sexual harassment during her tenure on the show.

Abdul’s suit detailed the numerous instances she claimed Nigel acted inappropriately, with a notable encounter in the early season of the show when they were filming to hold auditions. “Abdul attempted to push Lythgoe away from her,” the court document revealed. “When the doors to the elevator for her door opened, Abdul ran out of the elevator and to her hotel room, Abdul quickly called one of her representatives in tears to inform them of the assault.”

Abdul also revealed that he put her in another uncomfortable situation when she came to his house for a work dinner in 2014, only for Nigel to allegedly make advances towards her. The singer noted that she initially declined to come forward with her experiences for fear that it would harm her career.

Nigel Lythgoe denies Paula Abdul’s accusations

In a recent interview with TMZ, Lythgoe addressed Abdul’s allegations, noting that he wasn’t surprised given her well-known erratic behaviors. However, he strongly refuted ever placing her in such situations. “To say that I am shocked and saddened by the allegations made against me by Paula Abdul is a wild understatement,” Lythgoe admitted to the news outlet.
